Objects of Reference (OoR)

Many children have difficulties processing and interpreting auditory and visual information. Objects of reference assist pupils to obtain information from the object. They are used in a consistent manner across the school to assist students to obtain information from the cue object.

As adult we use object without a second thought.

If I am holding my car keys I’m going out in my car, If I have my purse I’m going shopping , My Gym bag mean exercise at the  gym. It’s simply a link by association.

We have worked to extend our resources for events out of school.  Parent, NHS, respite care, residential.

The important element is consistency of approach. Once an object assigned as a cue there is no changing.

An OoR helps to forewarn and prepare the child for an activity.

The OoR  cue is given to the child to explore.

For example Keys

The Keys represent going out in the car

Every time before a car journey the child is presented with cue keys and told ‘going in Car’.

When the child gets into the car the keys are removed and the next OoR is given.

Pupils develop recognition and an understanding and anticipation of a forthcoming event or activity.

We strongly believe in the positive benefits derived from our pupil’s communication strategies being used both at home and school. As this helps to develop clear consistent routines and shared expectations for the individuals.
